Kathie, how will you be using this tool in your teaching or for other projects? The tool looks exciting, and I am thinking of implementation possibilities, but also wondering what you have in mind for your own teaching and professional goals.

Thanks for posting this to the TechRhet list; it will be great to see what tool was generated.

While watching parts of the interviews, I was reminded of my experiences with a local branch of the National Writing Project. Do you know if this model of 1 week, 1 tool has been shared with the NWP or the technology arm of it? It seems like a pretty good fit.

I appreciate you keeping this just over 5 minutes. I'm sure editing was hard, but I like the short docs.

Best,
gz

What can you expect from administrators? They know absolutely nothing, except contempt for academia they have failed to become members of, and how to preserve their own little meaningless-though quite well-paid-perches on the academic totem pole.

That's pretty hilarious. I've seen this video clip used in a similar context. I think it was about twitter. Can't recall.

This is a nice summary of the techrhet conversation and I have to agree with the conclusions. The gap theory and the differences between text and media tools I think are true at practical levels, but not really generalizable. There are always gaps and the right environment could help writers work them in whatever media--a print-centric thinker could bridge over to the visual, but by the same token a competent writer could be challenged to bridge over to the exceptional level. I guess, if you posit consciousness based on alphabetic language, you might be able to argue for richer crossings in other media, but you could just as easily say why not stick with with the text then, if that's the way we conceptualize things (which I question).

Still, just keeping with the analogy of writing, you'd have to argue for doing some of the coding and new media composing in class. A print focused writing class informed by any teacherly insight would never just analyze the texts of others. So, a course dealing with new media would also spend time on production, which means time learning to work the tools and materials--at least if it's a writing class. Ultimately, it's more fun and educational to make stuff than to look at it.
